The Poodle: Elegance and Intelligence on Four Legs

The Poodle is an elegant and lively breed, known for its intelligence, affection and its characteristic curly and silky coat. Available in different sizes – standard, miniature and toy – the Poodle easily adapts to different environments and lifestyles, making it an ideal companion for families and active people. Its sociable nature and ability to learn quickly also make it an excellent companion and working dog.

THE STORY

Etymologically, the French word “caniche” comes from “cane”, a French term for a female duck. In other countries, this term refers to splashing in water. Originally, this dog was used for hunting waterfowl. It descends from the Barbet, of which it has retained many characteristics. In 1743, it was called “la caniche”: female Barbet. Later, the Barbet and the Poodle became more and more diverse. Breeders strove to obtain original subjects with a uniform color. The Poodle has become very popular as a companion dog, for its amiable, joyful and faithful character, but also for its four sizes and its different colors that everyone can choose at their pleasure.

The morphology

The Poodle is an elegant and harmonious breed, characterized by a proud bearing, agile movements, and a lively and intelligent expression. Its structure is well-proportioned, with a well-balanced and muscular body, never heavy, expressing both strength and lightness. The head is straight and well-sculpted, with a long, fine muzzle, dark almond-shaped eyes, and an attentive, penetrating expression. The ears are long, pendulous, and covered with wavy fur. The neck is strong and slightly arched, the back short and solid, with a deep chest and tight flanks. The tail, set high, is carried obliquely or slightly raised.

The coat, a distinctive feature of the breed, is abundant, curly or corded, of a fine, woolly, and dense texture, always uniformly colored: permitted colors include black, white, brown, gray, apricot, and red. The body proportions should be harmonious, with the height at the withers slightly greater than the length of the body, giving it an elegant and noble appearance.

The Poodle's temperament is lively, sociable, and loyal. It is an extremely intelligent dog, easy to train, and endowed with great sensitivity towards its owner. These qualities, combined with its refined appearance, make it an ideal companion for both family life and for working and show activities, embodying the perfect balance of grace, intelligence, and affection.
